Toward means “in the direction of.” The name came to us on a challenging day when a verse from Scripture came to mind:
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:14
The word toward stood out. It captures movement, purpose, and direction, exactly what we wanted our school to represent. That’s why we chose the name Toward English: a school dedicated to guiding people toward fluency with clarity, structure, and steady progress.
After launching the school on October 4, 2022, with online English courses for groups and private students, Toward English grew as demand increased and our teaching approach evolved. Over time, what began as a small school built around one teacher’s expertise transformed into a structured, data-driven training model.
Today, Toward English is becoming a comprehensive, results-driven language training system, built to help students improve their English as efficiently and effectively as possible. Our mission is no longer tied to one teacher’s style, but to a scalable, high-standard methodology designed to accelerate measurable progress for every learner.
Matthew Andrewes is an experienced ELT teacher with over ten years in language education, working with adult learners from beginner to advanced levels. He has been consistently recognized at the institutions he has served for professionalism, high-quality teaching, and a strong commitment to student progress.
Matthew began his teaching career in 2012 in Japan at a small conversation school called The Queen’s. With only an initial certification, he quickly became known as a reliable and engaging instructor. His work focused on creating enjoyable, high-retention conversation classes and supporting learners with practical English for everyday life.
After returning to the United States in 2016, Matthew taught ESL across multiple educational settings, working with teenagers and adults at all proficiency levels. From 2016 to 2021, he supported high school, undergraduate, graduate, and immigrant learners in developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. His responsibilities also included curriculum development, student advising, and leading professional development workshops.
In October 2022, Matthew and Erica launched Toward English, an online English school created to help Brazilian immigrants strengthen their confidence and communication in English.
