Toward means “in the direction of.” The name came to us on a challenging day when a Bible verse came to mind: “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14).
The word “toward” stood out, and we decided to use the name “Toward English” for our company – because this is our goal: to guide people toward English fluency.
The school launched on October 4, 2022, offering online English courses for groups and private students.

Award-winning ELT teacher with over ten years of experience creating and delivering classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced adult learners.
His teaching journey began in 2012 when he started teaching at “The Queen’s” in Japan. Even with only an initial certification, Matthew quickly established a reputation for professionalism and excellence, teaching students IELTS exam preparation, enabling professionals to prepare for public speaking events, and translating instruction manuals and ESP materials.
Since returning from Japan to the USA in June 2016, his work has included teaching ESL to teenagers and adults of all levels, course design and curriculum development, delivering professional development workshops, and student advising. From 2016 to 2021, Matthew worked with high school, undergraduate, graduate students, and immigrants, helping them develop reading, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking skills.
In October 2022, Matthew and Erica opened Toward English, an online English school aimed at helping Brazilian immigrants develop their conversational skills through the use of Dogme ELT and the weak-to-medium version of CLT.
