Real-Life Skills for Real Impact

Language learning made simple. At Toward English, we focus on equipping your employees with essential language skills for on-the-job tasks. We assess their abilities in realistic scenarios—like interviews and presentations—ensuring they can communicate effectively and overcome language barriers.

We believe that every student has the ability to learn and speak English fluently. But without clear objectives and a straightforward plan, it’s easy to lose motivation and give up.

Most students never achieve fluency, but it’s not because they’re incapable; it’s because they have vague objectives and a poor plan.

Our straightforward approach to customizing courses for organizations and individual professionals is to ensure that the course objectives and plan are crystal clear for all major stakeholders (ie project managers, employees, and instructors). Moreover, end-of-course assessment is performance-based and designed to determine student attainment of the course objectives. In sum, everything comes back to the needs analysis because that is what enables us to customize our existing courses or, if necessary, develop industry-specific courses from scratch (e.g. an English for medical purposes course or, English for construction).

Our approach

What our students say:

Nice to Meet You, I’m Matthew Andrewes, a co-founder of Toward English.

My journey as a language teacher began in 2012, teaching at “The Queen’s” in Japan. In October 2022, my wife and I founded Toward English with a vision to offer high-quality conversation classes to Brazilians.

Since then, our vision for Toward has steadily changed to meet the growing need for professional communication skills. Today, we help Brazilian companies and professionals develop communication skills to meet personal and professional goals. Additionally, we develop entirely customized curriculum for organizations that require highly specialized courses such as English for construction purposes (ECP), English for hospitality (EH), or English for medical purposes (EMP).

I have a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University (ALB in Extension Studies), a postgraduate degree from Trinity College London (LTCL DipTESOL), and a master’s from the University of Chichester (Master of Arts in Professional Development for Language Education)
